Chaos or Calm? You Choose
Pt2: Managing External Chaos

Managing External Chaos

Which way will you go?

Managing external chaos becomes easier when we recognise that it can arise from a disorganized environment, conflicting demands, or challenging relationships, and the expectations of others with influence in our lives. While some external factors are beyond our control, how we respond to them can make a significant difference between being a victim of, OR managing external chaos and defusing its control,

  • Organizing Your Environment - A cluttered space can be a sign of a cluttered mind, so declutter regularly! Things can gradually accumulate around us. Identify and remove those unnecessary items from your workspace and rest spaces. Experiencing the freedom of spaciousness subconsciously contributes to feelings of calm which improves our focus and productivity.

Bringing order to your external environment can be simpler than you think.

  • Organize Your Tasks: Find the tools that work for you, e.g. to-do lists, calendars, and project management apps to keep track of your responsibilities. Identify and prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance. Removing unnecessary and low-value tasks is also part of decluttering.

  • Create a Routine: Establishing a daily routine can bring a sense of order and predictability, reducing the stress of constant decision-making.

Managing External Relationships

All of our relationships either contribute to or alleviate chaos. Here are 3 ways to foster positive interactions:

  1. Effective Communication: Be specific and remove assumptions. Clear and concise communication can prevent misunderstandings and conflicts. Practice active listening and ensure that your messages are understood.
  2. Set Expectations: Be clear about your availability, deadlines, and boundaries with colleagues, clients and family members/friends. This transparency can prevent last-minute surprises and unnecessary pressure.
  3. Conflict Resolution: Address conflicts promptly (but not always in the heat of the moment), and constructively. Approach disagreements with a solution-focused mindset and look for middle-ground. Ensure you give time to see things from all sides.

Navigating External Challenges

Develop a flexible mindset to adapt to changing circumstances, reducing stress and enhancing problem-solving capabilities. Focus on what you can control, directing your energy towards aspects where you can make a difference.

Returning to a Better State of Being

Achieving a state of calm amidst chaos requires ongoing effort and intentional practices. Here are some strategies to help you return to and maintain a better state of being:

Building Resilience

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks. It’s a key component of maintaining calm in the face of adversity.

  • Cultivate a Positive Mindset: Focus on the positives in your life and practice gratitude. A positive outlook can improve your resilience, and there is so much to be thankful for. Thankful for what we HAVE and what we DO NOT HAVE.
  • Learn from Experience: Reflect on past challenges and how you overcame them. Use these experiences to build confidence in your ability to handle future difficulties, and to also be an encourager to others.
  • Stay Connected: Build a support network which can consist of friends, family, and colleagues. Social connections can provide emotional support as well as practical assistance.

Continuous Growth and Learning

  • Invest in Personal Development: Engage in activities that promote growth, such as reading, attending workshops, or pursuing new hobbies. Continuous learning keeps your mind active and adaptable.
  • Set Goals: Establish clear, achievable goals for your personal and professional life. Goals provide direction and a sense of purpose, helping to focus your efforts.

Finding Balance

Strive for a blended work-life integration where both aspects coexist practically. Allocate time for work and personal activities, ensuring neither is neglected. Practice self-compassion, recognizing that mistakes are part of growth and perfection is unattainable.

Embracing Calm

Recognize the importance of taking breaks, enjoying leisure activities, and spending time in nature. These moments of calm are not indulgences but necessities for maintaining a balanced and fulfilling life.

Choosing calm over chaos is a deliberate and continuous process.

This involves managing your internal state (as looked at previously) through emotional intelligence, organizing your external environment, and adopting strategies to maintain a better state of being. By taking proactive steps, you can transform both internal and external chaos into calm, leading yourself and others with clarity and confidence. You will be a better person to be around when you are intentional about overcoming chaos.

Remember, the power to choose lies within you. Embrace it, and step into a more serene and empowered life.
